Acupuncture for Weight Loss

In my clinic I am regularly asked if acupuncture can help with weight loss.

Of course a degree of will power is still required but the answer is most certainly 'yes' – acupuncture can help you lose weight - and is something I treat successfully in my clinic on a regular basis.

There have been a number of influential studies that back this up.  Most recently the The BMJ journal Acupuncture in Medicine which concluded that “acupuncture does boost weight loss”.

How does Acupuncture help weight loss?

There are certain acupuncture points on the body that, when stimulated, are known to:

-       Reduce appetite and food cravings

-       Strengthen digestion to improve and increase metabolism

-       Release endorphins making it easier to deal with stress / emotional upset – common triggers for overeating

-       Reduce cholesterol and regulate insulin

What happens during a Weight Loss Acupuncture treatment?

Kate will feel your pulse during your consultation.

Because we are all different I ask lots of questions to ascertain what is causing you to gain weight or preventing your weight loss. I will have a look at your tongue and feel your pulses to give me the full picture

I then stimulate acupuncture points in your ear, stomach, hands and legs using very fine, painless needles. The needles are kept in place for around 20 minutes.

What are the points in the ear for?

There are many incredibly powerful points on the ear.  To give you a few examples:

Mouth point – this is a point for the impulsive eater who may also smoke and talk a lot

Stomach point - for the person who eats even after they're full or who's constantly nibbling

Hungry point - for general appetite control

There are also points for particular cravings, for people who comfort eat, for water retention, for hormonal weight gain. I choose a selection of these points for each treatment depending upon the patient's problem and personality profile regarding overeating.

Appetite Reduction Between Treatments

To prolong the effects of the treatment adhesive ‘ear seeds’ are placed in the same spots on the ear to continue the stimulation between treatments.  When you feel an urge to eat, you apply mild pressure for about 20 seconds. This causes a mild endorphin release, relaxes you and helps you to resist the temptation.

How many sessions are required?

(Based on the average person who wants to lose between five and ten pounds.)

For fast and lasting results I recommend two (three if possible) sessions a week until you reach your goal.  Then we will discuss your booster treatments to maintain the weight.

How will I feel and how will it work?

Acupuncture triggers the body’s healing response so you will feel a sense of general wellbeing.  Your mood will improve due to the stimulation of endorphins (feel good hormones) as will your motivation.  Your digestion and metabolism will strengthen so you will have fewer cravings and any sluggishness or bloating will clear.

All this starts a ‘virtuous cycle’ and the end result is that you will lose weight and feel healthier and happier.
